Prepare the Onion and Garlic

Peel and chop the onion. Peel and crush the garlic.

Cook the Beef along with Onion and Garlic

Cook the beef, onion and garlic in the saucepan over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the ground beef is brown. Then drain.

Stir in the chili powder, oregano, cumin, salt, pepper sauce and tomatoes

Stir in the chili powder, oregano, cumin, salt, pepper sauce and tomatoes with their liquid, breaking up the tomatoes with a spoon or fork. This distributes the tomatoes evenly throughout the chili and makes serving the chili easier.

Heat the mixture to boiling over high heat. Once the mixture is boiling, reduce heat just enough so the mixture bubbles gently. Cover and cook 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

Stir in the beans with their liquid. Heat to boiling over high heat. Once the mixture is boiling, reduce heat just enough so mixture bubbles gently. Cook uncovered about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until you get the desired thickness (I recommend a medium thickness).

From my point of view, there is no other recipe where chili and ground beef can be mixed together like this one. I had an old recipe from a Mexican person, and with the help of my best friend (a great cook), together we managed to make the best combination of ingredients, transforming and adapting the original Mexican recipe into an American one.

Besides the fact you must have noted, on the ingredients list, Chili powder and Ground Beef, make sure you buy also 1 (16 ounces) can of undrained whole tomatoes and 1 (15 ounces) can of undrained red kidney beans. The rest of the ingredients you can find in the Ingredients list section. As I said, I had help for this recipe to make it balanced in taste, and if you’ll prepare it properly, you’ll love it (just put some love in it and will be just fine).

You can control the spiciness by reducing or adding more chili powder according to your taste. Make sure also to not drain the red kidney beans!

Notes and Tips

  • Essential Equipment: 3-quart saucepan or 12-inch skillet with high side.
  • To save time, increase chili powder to 2 tablespoons, and omit the cumin, oregano, and pepper sauce.
  • Don’t just add salt at the end. Soaking the beans in salted water will keep them together better during cooking and seasoning the meat when browning will yield better results.
  • Before you begin, make sure you are allowing enough time for the chili to cook properly. Giving it extra time allows flavors to mold together and lets you adjust levels of spice and thickness of the sauce.

 

 

Transforming in Cincinnati-Style Chili
