For example, my best option is strawberry flavor, but my husband likes caramel flavor on his apple crisp. That’s why in the ingredient list I didn’t add any type or brand. Many varieties of apples are available in supermarkets, therefore, you need to decide only what you’ll choose. The ones used for cooking and baking remain flavorful and firm when baked. Use a vegetable peeler to peel apples (this is the best way) or take out the skin with a knife. Using the peeler, you will remove just the thin skin, this not being possible with a knife. Here are some notes also:

  1. Essential Equipment: 8-inch square pan or 9-inch round pan.
  2. Blueberry Crisp: Substitute 4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries for the apples. If using frozen blueberries, thaw and drain them first.
  3. Cherry Crisp: Substitute a 21-ounce can cherry pie filling for the apples.

Preparation

Heat the oven to 375º. Grease the bottom and sides of the pan with the shortening.

Cut the apples

Peel the apples if desired. Cut the apple into fourths, and remove seeds. Cut each fourth into slices. You will need about 4 cups of apple slices. Spread the slices in the greased pan.

Mix the other ingredients

Mix the 2/3 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of oats, 1/3 cup margarine (or butter), 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 3/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Mix them all with a fork. The mixture will be crumbly. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the apples.

Bake about 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Serve warm with ice cream on top.
